Printed Three-Ball Sleeves

A three-ball sleeve is a small tuck box with an unusually tight brief: it has to slide over three spheres of a fixed diameter, hold them without rattling, and survive a box of a hundred and forty-four being thrown into a car boot.

Fit is the whole job. A millimetre of extra width and the balls move, which sounds cheap in the hand and marks the print from the inside. A millimetre under and the sleeve will not load on an automatic line at all, which is a problem nobody discovers until the run is being packed.

We cut to your ball’s measured diameter rather than to a nominal figure, print litho on folding boxboard, and check the first sleeve off the die against actual balls before the run continues.

Not if the fit is right. Marking is what happens when the balls have room to move inside the sleeve over a few hundred miles of transport — it is a fit problem presenting as a print problem.
