Laminated vs. uncoated golf ball sleeves
Two board and finish choices that change how a sleeve looks, feels and gets recycled. Here is how to pick.
The short answer
Choose a laminated sleeve when the pack has to look rich on a shelf or carry detailed, full-color artwork. Choose an uncoated sleeve when recycling is part of the brief: a sleeve with no film goes straight into kerbside paper collection, and a laminated one does not. Custom Golf Ball Sleeves makes both, from a minimum order of 12.
Side by side
| Laminated | Uncoated | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Folding boxboard with a matt or gloss film over the print | Uncoated kraft or recycled boxboard with no film |
| Print look | Rich, saturated color; photographs and gradients hold up | Colors sit into the fibre and look flatter; one strong color reads best |
| Colors | Litho CMYK plus spot colors | One or two colors, with soy-based inks available |
| Recycling | Not accepted by kerbside paper collection once laminated | Goes straight into kerbside paper recycling |
| Recycled content | Not usually claimed | Stated on the quote so it can be cited |
| Best for | Retail shelves, premium gifting and detailed artwork | Clubs with an environmental policy and buyers with procurement rules |
| Where we use it | Printed three-ball sleeves and window and display sleeves | Kraft and recycled sleeves |
| Minimum order | 12 sleeves | 12 sleeves |
When a laminated sleeve is the right call
A matt or gloss film protects the print from handling and lets color stay saturated, which matters when a logo includes gradients or when the sleeve sits on a counter for weeks. Printed three-ball sleeves and window and display sleeves use coated boxboard for this reason. The trade-off is disposal: once a film is on the board, it is no longer plain paper.
When an uncoated sleeve is the right call
Uncoated board suits clubs with an environmental policy and buyers whose procurement rules ask for recycled content in writing. Color knocks back into the fibre, so artwork designed for it, usually one strong color on brown board, looks deliberate rather than muted. Kraft and recycled sleeves are made this way, with the recycled content stated on your quote.
The verdict
Pick laminated for retail shelves, resort shops, premium gifts and any logo with fine detail or gradients.
Pick uncoated when you need to cite a recycling claim, or when a single bold color on natural board is the look you want.
